Vision and hearing standards for the DOT physical

Updated October 2026

Vision

The standard is at least 20/40 in each eye and with both eyes, with or without glasses or contacts; a field of vision of at least 70 degrees in each eye; and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals. An alternative vision standard exists for some drivers who don't meet the standard in one eye.

Hearing

You must hear a forced whisper at no less than five feet in your better ear, with or without a hearing aid, or pass an audiometric test. FMCSA also has a hearing exemption program.

Bring your glasses, contacts or hearing aids to the exam.
