Diabetes and your CDL

Updated October 2026

Drivers with diabetes can often qualify for a medical card.

If you use insulin

Since 2018, drivers with insulin-treated diabetes can be certified if their treating clinician completes FMCSA's Insulin-Treated Diabetes Mellitus Assessment Form (MCSA-5870) within 45 days before the exam. These drivers can be certified for up to one year at a time.

Stay on top of it

Keep your blood sugar records, follow your treatment plan, and plan meals and supplies for life on the road.
