How to prepare for your DOT physical
Updated October 2026
A little preparation can mean a full-length medical card instead of a short one, or a second trip.
Bring
Your driver's license, glasses, contacts or hearing aids, a list of every medication with doses, and any records your examiner may need, such as letters from specialists, recent test results or a CPAP compliance report.
Before the exam
Fill out your health history honestly and completely. Take your usual medications as prescribed. Many drivers find it helps to avoid extra caffeine and salt before a blood pressure check.
Find a certified examiner
Your exam must be done by a medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.
