Health coverage for drivers

Updated October 2026

Company drivers often get coverage through their employer. Owner-operators and drivers between jobs have to find their own. Here are the common options.

Your options

Employer plans: ask about premiums, deductibles and whether doctors along your routes are in network. A spouse's plan: often the most affordable family option. The Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov or your state's marketplace: you may qualify for savings based on income, and there's a yearly open enrollment period plus special enrollment after events like losing other coverage. Other plans like short-term plans or health sharing programs may cost less but often cover much less; read what's excluded.

What to compare

Monthly premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, nationwide networks (important on the road), telehealth, and prescription coverage.
